The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration plays an integral part in the daily operations of fishing and seafood businesses around our country. This agency sets science-based research and regulations to keep fisheries healthy and productive, so that they in turn can support millions of commercial and recreational fishing jobs and provide a steady and reliable source of domestic, wild-caught seafood. NOAA also delivers accurate and timely weather reports so that fishermen can remain safe out at sea while they catch and harvest fish, crabs, and shellfish enjoyed by millions of Americans every day.
Without adequate funding, however, NOAA will not be able to provide these critical services. That is why the Marine Fish Conservation Network will advocate for critical NOAA funding through the appropriations process.
The FY26 appropriations cycle in currently underway, and the Appropriations Committee is deciding how much to allocate to NOAA. Consistent and reliable funding for NOAA to achieve its mission will further America’s progress in fisheries management and continue to rebuild our fishery resources for economic prosperity, seafood security, recreational enjoyment, and increased ocean health. The Network calls on Congress to appropriate funding at mission-achievable levels of no less than FY24 amounts. With a $6.72 billion dollar investment, NOAA supports fishing and seafood businesses that contribute $470 billion to the U.S. economy, an excellent return on investment by any measure.
The Network is actively reaching out to the chairs and ranking members of the Senate Appropriations and House Appropriations Committee and the chairs and ranking members of the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies subcommittees in both chambers, advocating for funding at mission achievable levels. We welcome support for this effort from our members and colleagues.
